Linz is the third largest city in Austria and is a cosmopolitan center that should be on the program of each visitor to Austria. On the whole tourists who come to Austria have a tendency to flock to Vienna and Salzburg, the city is situated directly between Vienna and Salzburg, it's an industrial town, but not your conventional industrial town with hundreds of factories churning out pollution. The town has a village-type feel about it with all the industrial areas confined to the eastern boundary of the town. You can discover some of the inner courtyards between the Main Square and the Old Town Quarter, with lots to discover here, from original Roman foundations to vaults dating from medieval times. Explore the narrow side streets with charming little antique shops; the hardened shopper may discover a great hunting ground for a great number of unique souvenirs. Scholars, poets, musicians and architects found the town a most agreeable place to put down roots: astronomer Johannes Kepler taught at the university in the 17th century; composer Anton Bruckner was organist at the cathedral in the 19th century; Mozart and Beethoven stopped here long enough to write the Linz Symphony and the 8th respectively. On the city's doorstep is one of the world's most outstanding Baroque edifices, the Abbey St Florian, with its white and gold church, marble hall and rare book library. Austria's own Bruckner is buried beneath his treasured organ in the crypt. | |||||||||||||||
